 5G support will be available in phones above 10 thousand; 4G production will stop

Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel's 5G rollout has started in many parts of the country.The companies have promised to roll out 5G nationwide by early December 2023.Smartphone companies have also started rolling out software updates that unlock 5G support on compatible handsets.Most of these smartphones cost around Rs 15,000 or more.With 5G likely to become more mainstream in 2023, smartphone companies are now likely to launch more budget 5G smartphones in India.

Production of 4G phones will gradually stop

. Representatives of mobile phone makers met top government officials and assured them that they would launch phones priced above Rs 10,000 with 5G network support.The representatives further revealed that the phone companies will gradually stop production of 4G phones at this price point.

Budget smartphones above Rs 10,000 will be 5G

Representatives of smartphone companies ensured that they will phase out the production of 4G phones priced at Rs 10,000 or above and adopt 5G technology.The meeting was held with some top officials of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).Government officials directed mobile operators and smartphone makers to integrate their 5G services with 5G phones within the next three months.

Smartphone makers will gradually shift to 5G phones priced at Rs 10,000 or more, a smartphone company official told ANI on condition of anonymity,nearing 100 million 5G-ready phones .Of the 750 million mobile phone users in India, around 100 million have 5G-ready phones.The rest have devices that support 3G or 4G networks.

Government officials also directed mobile phone manufacturers to prioritize necessary software upgrades for early adoption of 5G services in India.Out of 100 million 5G-ready phones, most are not compatible with the network as smartphone makers like Apple and Samsung have not pushed the update to open 5G on most of their devices.The companies assured that they are working with telcos to ensure that consumers get 5G access once the update rolls out soon.
